Plot Summary
Threading the Needle is a drama centering on a critical point in the life of Eric Meyers, an aging stunt pilot who has suffered a series of tragedies, including the deaths of his wife and daughter in a highway accident. Becoming increasingly despondent and angry, Eric has begun drinking heavily and flying recklessly. With little to live for, he becomes obsessed with a murky legend among pilots involving Jasper Colburn, who supposedly flew his plane straight through the blades of the six 200-foot tall wind turbines on Monterey Ridge. Eric’s mechanic is Lacey Collins, a young woman who is a talented pilot in her own right, but who spends her time rebuilding engines and running errands to pay the rent. Lacey admires Eric and sees him as something of a father figure. Lacey has watched helplessly as Eric’s life has been spiraling downward and she becomes increasingly suspicious that he may attempt Jasper’s suicidal maneuver that is known among pilots as “Threading the Needle.” The climax of the film takes place at an Air Show in which Eric is the featured performer. The FAA has finally had enough and has issued an order grounding him. Defying the orders of the government and the airport, Eric takes to the sky in his Zlin-50. While the crowd watches, thinking it to be just another stunt, Eric lines up his approach to the wind turbines. The tower officials and Lacey all attempt to talk Eric to return to the field. The film builds to the climax of Eric attempting to thread the needle.
