Biography

Chrisandra Wells-Lester, born and raised in the state of Nebraska, has lived in Brooklyn, New York for the past 10 years. She attended Long Island University, where she majored in Media Arts and graduated in May 2000. During her college years she also participated in a study abroad program sponsored by the American Institute for Foreign Study in Merirda, Yucatan, Mexico.There, she attended the University del Mayab to further her Spanish language and culture studies. She is currently New York State Certified to teach Spanish.

Poetry has been a lifelong passion for Wells-Lester. She began creative writing during her primary school years and continues with much success. During high school she was awarded numerous honors for her poetry and artwork, most notably featured in the publication Who’s Who Among High School Students and an active participant in the NAACP ACT-SO Competition. She was ACT-SO's National First Place Poetry winner in 1992 at the convention in Nashville, Tennessee.

While living in New York she has had her poetry published in the LIU newspaper, the Seawanhaka. She has also performed in various venues such as the Nuyorican Poetry Café, the National Black Theatre of Harlem, the BrooklynYWCA-The Tea Party, and Washington Square Park. She was a Hottest Poet’s Local Winner and this enabled her to perform her spoken word live on ABC Radio in 1998. She has recently performed for Abiola Abrams' film screening at the Russell Simons' RUSH Arts Gallery in November 2005, and was currently selected to be a part of SUBVERSE- a project that will bring spoken word into the New York City subway system.
