Dave was born in Greenville, South Carolina in a women's shelter that closed down that same week. Within one week, Dave and his family had moved to Madeira Beach, Florida. His father was a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force and the family moved around a lot. Before his 20th birthday, Dave had lived in five different cities in Florida, as well as in South Carolina, North Dakota, Germany, Texas, California, Virginia, and Alaska. From Kindergarten through 12th grade, Dave attended 13 different schools.

On June 12th, 1986, he was stricken with a rare condition called Miller Fischer Variant Guillian Barre Syndrome. He had to relearn how to do everything over again from the most basic tasks such as lifting his head from the hospital bed and picking up a spoon. Within six months he was able to return to work and today only he can tell that this ever happened to him. Dave settled down somewhat and from the ages of 19 to today, has lived only in Florida, Ohio and California. He graduated from the Tallahassee Community College film program with honors, and went on to attend the FSU Film School. Before graduating, Dave left the Film School with only a film law class and a thesis film to go. He later graduated from the University of Central Florida. However, three days before graduating, Dave was bitten by a poisonous coral snake in his back yard in Orlando, Florida. He spent a night in the ER and a day in ICU, but as the first sibling in his family to receive a college degree, he was determined to allow his parents to see him walk the stage to receive his degree.
