BOB PURVEY BIOGRAPHY
An Eclectic Performer
Bob's prominance, as an artist, started at age eighteen when he became the principal designer of "The Ugly" model surfboard, commercially manufactured by Con Surfboards of Santa Monica, in 1967. Riding The Ugly surfboard, Bob won the tip-time division of the Morey-Pope U.S. Invitational Professional Championships. The Ugly's success catapulted Bob and The Ugly surfboard into the annals of surfing history.

Good looks, television commercials, magazine ads and notoriety as a "world class surfer" led to theatrical films and televison roles. The transition as one of the first professional surfers in the history of the sport to professional actor, came quickly.
His film credits include, first, a bit part in AIP's Mary Jane, then playing himself in Cinerama's Follow Me. Bob's television credits include co-star in the title role as "Alex Khorras" in Mission Impossible - The Rebel (Paramount, 1970), a series regular "Rhett Saxton" in Lovers and Friends (NBC, 1977), a semi-regular in General Hospital (ABC, 1985-89) and featured roles on A-Team, Rich Man, Poor Man, among other shows. Most notably is the principal role "Flip" in the Emmy nominated CBS pilot, Winners: I Can.
National television commercial appearances (on-camera), include Hallmark Cards, Chevrolet Celebrity and Atari PacMan, among many others.
By 1980, his new challenge became business. He started by owning (with partners) and co-operating a retail surf shop called Graphlite. Then he became a promoter of surfing events, Malibu environmentalist and award-winning producer of community access television documentaries.
In 2004, Bob launched The Ugly Clothing Company (surf wear) to promote competitive surfing and environmental stewardship of Malibu. His Ugly innovative board short design has set a new standard in functionality and is now considered the most comfortable board shorts in the world.
Bob has a knack to create commercial products and sometimes win an award or two. His eclectic background enabled creations from surfboard designs to a part in a play, T-shirt designs to environmnetal action groups. His latest promotion is www.EcoMalibu.org - check it out!
Bob is 5' 11", 230 lbs., has blue eyes and salt & pepper hair when he's not shaved entirely bald.
